How does the serving size calculator work?

Grams per serving is the finished batch weight divided by the number of servings. Weigh the food after cooking, because water leaves during baking and the raw weight is higher than the finished weight.

If you enter batch totals for calories and nutrients, the tool divides each by the number of servings and rounds the way FDA rounds on a label: calories to the nearest 5 or 10, fat to the nearest half gram or gram, sodium to the nearest 5 or 10 milligrams. It then computes the % Daily Value. Take the per-serving values to the Nutrition Label Maker to print the panel.

What does a worked example look like?

A batch of 12 muffins weighs 1,200 g after baking, so each muffin is 100 g. If the whole batch has 3,000 calories, 120 g fat, 2,400 mg sodium, 360 g carbohydrate, 180 g sugars, and 48 g protein, each muffin has 250 calories, 10 g fat (13% DV), 200 mg sodium (9% DV), 30 g carbohydrate (11% DV), 15 g sugars, and 4 g protein.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate serving size?

Weigh the whole finished batch in grams. Divide by the number of servings. That is the grams per serving, which is what a Nutrition Facts label shows in parentheses after the household measure.

How do I calculate calories per serving?

Add up the calories of every ingredient in the batch, then divide by the number of servings. This tool does the division and the FDA rounding. It does not look up the ingredient values for you.

Can I choose any serving size?

For a packaged food sold at retail, FDA sets a Reference Amount Customarily Consumed for each food category, and the serving size must be based on it. For cottage food that is exempt from nutrition labeling, the serving size is your call.

What is % Daily Value?

The share of the daily amount FDA sets for a nutrient, on a 2,000 calorie diet. Total fat is 78 g, sodium is 2,300 mg, and total carbohydrate is 275 g.
