How does the cake pricing calculator work?
It is a recipe cost calculator set up for a cake. Each ingredient row computes what the cake uses from the package price. Packaging is per slice, so a $7 box and board for a 12 slice cake is about $0.60 a slice. Your time is hours times your hourly rate. Overhead covers utilities, permits, and equipment. Markup is your profit on top of the full cost.
The whole-cake price is the revenue line. The per-slice price is what to quote when a customer asks by the serving.
What does a worked example look like?
The sample 8 inch layer cake uses about $17 of ingredients. Box and board add about $7. Four hours at $25 adds $100. Overhead at 15 percent adds about $19. The cake costs about $142 to make. At a 50 percent markup the price is about $214, or $17.80 a slice. If that is above your market, the lever is hours, not ingredients.
Frequently asked questions
How much should I charge for a cake?
Add up ingredients, the box and board, your decorating time at an hourly rate, and overhead. That is your cost. Add a markup of 50 to 100 percent. Most home bakers land between $3 and $8 a slice for a decorated cake, but your market sets the ceiling.
How do I price a cake per slice?
Set the batch to the number of slices the cake serves. An 8 inch round serves about 12 to 16 party slices. The tool then shows cost and price per slice as well as for the whole cake.
How do I count decorating time?
Time everything: baking, cooling, filling, crumb coat, final coat, decorating, boxing, and cleanup. Four to six hours for a decorated two-tier cake is normal. Enter the total in the hours field.
What about a cake board and box?
Put their cost in the packaging field. For a whole cake, set the batch to 1 and packaging to the total for the board and box.
